A configurable distributed operating system

Based on the Linux Foundation's DANOS project, Elster OS is a configurable distributed operating system specifically designed for disconnected, intermittent, and lossy (DIL) network environments. Ideal for testing distributed systems in austere, contested, or infrastructure-denied scenarios.

Built-in vplane supports connecting multiple nodes in a dynamic, secure mesh network that is resilient to packet loss, high latency, and intermittent connectivity. Nodes automatically reconnect and routes self-heal when links degrade or fail.

Currently under active development and testing.

Core Technology

Linux Foundation DANOS — Disaggregated software platform for network devices, providing a robust foundation for distributed computing in degraded network conditions.

Vplane Technology — Resilient mesh networking over lossy links with automatic reconnection, route healing, and store-and-forward capabilities for disruption tolerance. Maintains connectivity even with 50%+ packet loss.

Intel DAOS Integration — High-performance distributed storage with real-time analytics and data processing across the network, designed for intermittent connectivity.

Enterprise-Ready by Design

Immutable Infrastructure — Read-only root filesystem with atomic A/B partition upgrades. No configuration drift, guaranteed reproducibility across your entire fleet.

One-Click Rollbacks — Instant rollback to any previous known-good state. Failed update? Return to working configuration in seconds.

Compliance Reports — Every image build includes a detailed compliance report documenting all settings, packages, and customizations. Guaranteed configuration for audit trails.

Security Hardening — Built to meet DISA STIG, NIST 800-53, and CIS Benchmarks. FedRAMP-aligned security controls for federal deployments.

Patch Lifecycle Management

Deployment Rings — Roll out updates in stages: Test (0.5%) → Pilot (5%) → Fast (50%) → Broad (44.5%). Only reliable patches advance to the next ring, while problematic ones are automatically stopped.

Staged Rollouts — Deploy to test endpoints first, then non-critical systems, then production. Success metrics are analyzed before proceeding to the next wave.

Automatic Rollbacks — High failure rates automatically pause rollouts. Instant rollback to previous known-good state with full audit trail.

Health Checks — Continuous monitoring of update success rates. Administrators retain manual override controls while automation handles routine deployments.
